This Clinical Guidance training provides comprehensive, evidence-based information to provide the optimal management of pregnant and parenting women with opioid use disorder and their infants. The training highlights successful approaches for caring for the mother with opioid use disorder and her child. This interactive training aims to help healthcare and behavioral health professionals and patients determine the most clinically appropriate action for a particular situation and informs individualized treatment decisions.


Primary Audience - Prescribers and multi-disciplinary team with whom they provide care.

Participation in this no-cost, virtual training meets the new one-time, eight-hour CME requirement for Drug Enforcement Administration-registered physicians and physician assistants, as outlined in the Consolidated Appropriations Act of 2023.

Professor, Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, School of Medicine; The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (UNC-CH), Chapel Hill, North Carolina; joint appointments – Professor, Department of Psychology UNC-CH and Professor, Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at Johns Hopkins University

Dr. Jones is a licensed psychologist and an internationally recognized expert in the development and examination of both behavioral and pharmacologic treatments for pregnant women and their children in risky life situations. In 2021 Expertscape ranked Dr. Jones as the number one expert in the world in neonatal abstinence syndrome, number four (in the USA) and number five (in the world) expert in opioid-related disorders. She has received continuous National Institutes of Health funding since 1994 and has written more than 250 peer-reviewed publications. Dr. Jones has also authored two books, one on treating patients for substance use disorders and the other on comprehensive care for women who are pregnant and have substance use disorders. She also has written multiple textbook chapters on the topic of pregnancy and addiction. Dr. Jones has co-authored multiple national and international guidelines on the topic of caring for pregnant and post-pregnant people with substance use disorders and their children including those published by the WHO, SAMHSA and ASAM. She also co-authored both the women’s and children’s section of the UN International Standards for the Treatment of Drug Use Disorders and the UN guidelines on prevention and treatment for girls and women. In 2020 Dr. Jones won the ASAM R. Brinkley Smithers and Distinguished Scientist Award. She consults for the UN and the WHO and is a member of the NIH’s HEAL multidisciplinary working group and the Advisory Committee on Research on Women's Health. Dr. Jones leads or is involved in projects around the world focused on improving the lives of children, women, and families.

 

Katrina Mark

Katrina Mark, MD is an Associate Professor in the Department of Obstetrics, Gynecology and Reproductive Sciences at the University of Maryland School of Medicine. She is dual Board Certified in Obstetrics and Gynecology and Addiction Medicine. She completed her residency training at the University of Maryland and joined the faculty in 2012. She is the Medical Director of the Women’s Health Center as well as the Director of the SUPPORT clinic, a comprehensive and collaborative practice that specializes in care and of women with substance use disorders during pregnancy. She is also the Clinical Director of the Center for Substance Use in Pregnancy, a research center focused on issues related to perinatal addiction.

 

Essence Hairston

Outpatient Program Manager, UNC Horizons Program in Wake County; Director of Community Engagement and Integrated Treatment Services; Clinical Instructor, Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology

Essence Hairston is a Clinical Instructor at UNC-Chapel Hill Department of ObGyn. She serves as the Outpatient Program Manager and Director of Community Engagement and Integrated Treatment Services and Co-Chair of the DEI Taskforce at UNC Horizons-Wake. Most of her experience consists of intensive substance abuse treatment, with eleven years of working in residential treatment programs. She is focused on the intersectionality of maternal and perinatal substance use and mood disorders, adverse childhood experiences, reproductive justice, and integrative health care models that includes a social justice lens. She oversees the interdisciplinary outpatient SUD program, the statewide post-release SUD initiative for pregnant and parenting women with a SUD transitioning out of correctional settings in North Carolina and substance use counselors that provides behavioral health services at correctional settings and provides mentorship and supervision for addiction and behavioral health specialists.
